5 types of cables: 2 are mirrors of each other to give symmetry to the jumper.

I think it is likely that these sorts of textiles were being made well over a thousand years ago by Vikings as you see similar patterns in metals, some art and some surviving wood.  It is a nice feeling knitting in front of a fire and thinking of how the crafts have been passed on to us for generations. Surely passing on a skill is one of the best Christmas presents you can give?
